Allison Koornneef (Class of 2008)

Bachelor of Design, Masters of International Development• OCAD University

The teachers at Durham went beyond teaching us the material; they taught us to think critically, challenged us to develop our opinions and to defend them, and encouraged us to make wise, God-honouring choices. Attending Durham also meant having supportive staff who knew me well. They were able to encourage and guide me in my educational and career goals.I have recently completed a Masters course in Barcelona, Spain in the field of International Development. The focus of the Masters was on the ethical and technical issues involved in  humanitarian architecture and urban planning in places such as slums, conflict zones, refugee camps, and disaster prone regions.

"Thank you Mr. Nielsen for all the skills you taught me throughout high school as my English teacher! I received my first assignment back in my Structure of English class today and my professor pulled me aside and asked me where I learned to formulate ideas, organize my thoughts in a clear and structured manner, and defend an argument so well. He told me to tell you that he congratulates you for being such a fine example to me in my learning throughout high school. It is a blessing to have these skills! "
