Computer Technology continues to change the way that we communicate, collaborate, innovate and create. Software engineers create the tools that permit us to remainconnected and accomplish these things. DCHS Alumni, Jeff Muizelaar (2002) is one of those creative thinkers. He is currently plying his skills of problem solving and developing solutions for Mozilla, the creators of FireFox, a small non-profit company making a large impact on internet users, including the users at Durham Christian High School.
While a student at Durham, Jeff was already combining his technical skills and creativity. On a whim in grade nine, Jeff auditioned for the drama production. Building on his original small role, he remained involved in drama productions for the remainder of his years, eventually becoming the technical director. Jeff formally developed his skills at the University of Waterloo, studying Software Engineering which combines Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering principles. As part of his education, he also completed several co-op placements. One placement took him out west to Silicon Valley, the southern part of the San Franscisco Bay Area in California, to work for Apple Inc., collaborating on the iPhone.
At Mozilla, Jeff is on the graphics team. Everything we see on the screen when using Firefox goes through code that his team is responsible for. He continues to improve our online experience!
When looking back to his days in the Durham Region, Jeff stated,
"Starting in elementary school (Immanuel Christian School, Oshawa) and continuing at Durham, I gained a valuable understanding of a Christian worldview and how to look critically, yet honestly, at the world around me. This has helped me build a framework for evaluating the impact my work has on the world, and to determine whether it's honourable. Durham was also a great community to grow up in and I feel it prepared me well for a secular university."
